why we made the switch: how going toxin-free has impacted our home
We certainly understand that oils are not cheap (at least, the only ones that we would trust in our home and on our bodies are not). I personally am very passionate about healthy living. Beyond the fact that I hate being sick, I am quite particular about making sure that we aren't putting toxins into our bodies. After we started using essential oils, I began to do extensive research regarding the ingredients in everyday items...cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, shampoo, even my make-up. I was really horrified by what I found (if you want to do research for yourself, I would recommend downloading the Think Dirty app and scanning your household products to see the toxicity rating for each of them). Our old Tide laundry detergent contained chemicals that were toxic to reproduction and caused allergies. A lot of the cleaners that we used (Windex, Clorox, Febreeze, etc.) were loaded with chemicals that were seeping into our skin and were harming our health. Both of us have had a parent with cancer, so health issues run deep in our family. While we may not be able to prevent cancer, we can make sure that we are taking care of our bodies and the environment that we live in in such a way that we are prepared to fight it if it comes. As a result of this, we pitched everything. All of the lotions, hair products, perfumes, cleaning supplies, laundry detergents, fabric softeners, air fresheners, make-up, shampoos and shaving creams got tossed into a garbage bag and we haven't looked back.
Young Living sells all-natural, toxin-free laundry detergent (and it smells amazing), and now we use that in conjunction with wool dryer balls (there is a post about that from a few weeks ago if you want more information about toxin-free laundry) We use Dr. Bronner's Castille soap and Young Living's Thieves Household Cleaner to do all of our cleaning (literally everything around the house...floors (tile and hardwood), sinks, mirrors, toilets, shower, drains, windows, and even the doors). We make our own shampoos, shaving creams, air fresheners, and lotions using essential oils. I switched to an all-natural, chemical-free make-up brand (Root Pretty). Honestly, we have seen such a change in our health and an overall decrease in the toxicity in our home. We can now smell chemicals in other people's homes because we are so used to not being around the toxins! We cannot even go through the cleaning aisle in the grocery store anymore because the smell is too overwhelming.
Essential oils haven't been the sole reason that our health has improved, but it has greatly contributed to it. These lovely oils aren't the cure-all for everything. We still get headaches sometimes and I even had the flu this week. What has changed is the way that our body responds when we get sick. Our bodies respond to the way that the essential oils work, and because we are supporting our natural body systems with them, we feel better sooner. We often apply Thieves to our vita-flex points, or diffuse Thieves and Lemon if we aren't feeling well. We put Lavender, Cedarwood, and coconut oil on our feet before we go to bed. If we have a headache, we put a blend of Peppermint, Spearmint, Eucalyptus, and fractionated coconut oil on the back of our necks. I (Hannah) start my day with Joy over my heart and Endoflex on my forearms. I end my day with Lavender and Frankincense on my face as a toner. My husband sleeps better and snores less when we roll Breathe Again over his chest before we go to sleep.
Oils, in conjunction with striving to eat well and to live in a toxin-free environment, can have amazing results. I know that it can be overwhelming to get into oils, particularly because there are so many places to start and so many oils to choose from. Don't try to change everything at once. All of the changes that we just talked about happened over the course of a few months. We couldn't afford to switch everything at the exact same time. We started with oils and began switching other things along as the budget allowed for it. Honestly, we cannot image a single day without using Young Living essential oils, as they have become such a vital part of our life.
